Week 2 Homework and Notes

NOTE 1:  WEEK ONE NOTES REMAIN THE SAME EXCEPT WE ARE INCREASING THE DISTRACTIONS ON EVERYTHING.   TRY TO FIND SOME PARKS WHERE LEASHED DOGS MIGHT BE TO START FOR INSTANCE (OR IF THERE IS SOMETHING CHALLENGING ON YOUR PROPERTY).  HE IS READY FOR A CHALLENGE AS LONG AS IT DOES NOT OVERWHELM BOTH OF YOU.

NOTE 2:  USE THE LONG LINE WHEN IT MAKES SENSE TO FOR CIRCLE AND LONG PLACE OUTSIDE AND FOR STILL AND CIRCLE SIT STAYS OUTSIDE.   IF YOU ARE IN A PARK, MOST LIKELY YOU WILL NEED TO BE ON THE 6' LEASH.

NOTE 3:  MAKE NOTE OF ANYTHING THAT DISTRACTS HIM THAT YOU COULD EASILY (BUT STILL BE A SLIGHT CHALLENGE) WORK AROUND ALSO.

  Homework Schedule :

Calming Exercises (If you get up to 30 minutes with long place, you can rotate Sit on The Dog and Long Place on Different Days):

  1. Sit on the Dog 30 + minutes Goal:  To get your dog to lay down on their own steam in five minutes or under. Definitely be practicing this outside with Knox.  If you can find a park where you can sit back 50-100 feet from occasional distractions that would be helpful for him.
  2. Long Place 30 minutes to start build up to 30 minutes (at which point, you can start to rotate sit on the dog and long place) Goal:  To get your dog comfortable and more relaxed staying on their place for five minutes.

Obedience Exercises (Sit on the Dog or Just Sit Reps can be useful to warm up with as the distractions increase):
  1. Heeling and Sit With Correction (if needed) 10-15 minutes Goal:  To get 3 sets of four in a row sits outside.   Also to get a string of five to possibly 10 well positioned steps in a row before the stop and sit.  If you are at a park, you might not make the goal (which is fine, just exposing him to working there will help).  If the sits become hard, you can revert to molded sits or interim sit correction at a park like setting.  He may do just fine after he calms down.

  2. Still Sit Stay 6-10minutes  Goal:  To get four in a row of 1 minute stays outside in increased distractions (not easy but not too challenging either).   Knox was already at circle stays, so you could use this as a warm up if you decide to do circle sit stays.  You can also work on distance from him on the sit stays starting with the 6' leash and then working up to the long line.

  3. Circle Sit Stay  6-10 minutes  Goal:  To get four in a row of 1 minute circle stays outside.

  4. Send to Place 5 plus minutes Goal:  To get your dog to step on themselves for times in a row for 3 sets.  I DON'T THINK I GOT A VIDEO OF HIM DOING THIS OUTSIDE.  SO I AM PUTTING IN A STAND IN DOG.  KANE HAS THE LONG LINE ON FOR SEND TO PLACE, BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THAT.  SENDING HIM ON THE 6' LEASH IS FINE FOR NOW.

  5. **Circle Place 5-8 plus minutes  Goal:  To be able to perform 4 circle places in a row for one minute.   ALSO SOMEHOW DID NOT GET CIRCLE PLACE ON TAPE WITH KNOX.  SO THIS IS JEZZABELLE PRACTICING HER OUTSIDE CIRCLE PLACE.  YOU CAN USE A LONG LINE WITH KNOX ON THIS.
