Week 1 Notes, Homework and Videos

NOTE 1:  ALL TRAINING SHOULD BE DONE WITH TRAINING COLLAR AND TRAINING LEASH ON.

NOTE 2:  DO NOT LEAVE TRAINING COLLAR OR TRAINING SLIP LEAD ON WHEN YOU ARE NOT ACTIVELY TRAINING YOUR DOG.

NOTE 3:  PLEASE PUT ON YOUR TRAINING COLLAR CORRECTLY.  ALSO BE SURE TO HOLD THE LEASH CORRECTLY.

This is a link to a leash article on our business blog.  Leashes How to Hold Them and How to Fold Them.

NOTE 4:  EVERYTHING THIS WEEK SHOULD BE DONE IN LOW AND EASY DISTRACTION, UNLESS IT IS TOO VERY EASY.  IN THAT CASE, YOU CAN SLIGHTLY INCREASE THE DISTRACTION FOR SIT ON THE DOG FOR INSTANCE.

NOTE 5:  THE GOALS ARE PLACES TO WORK TO IN THE FUTURE.  IF YOU DON'T MAKE THE GOAL, DON'T WORRY AS LONG AS YOU PUT IN THE WORK TOWARDS THE GOAL.  PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN CALL OR EMAIL ME WITH ANY TRAINING PROBLEMS THAT COME UP IN BETWEEN LESSONS.

NOTE 6:  IF YOU DON'T GET THROUGH ALL THE EXERCISES IN ONE DAY, YOU CAN JUST BE SURE THAT THE EXERCISES YOU DID NOT GET TO ARE DONE THE NEXT DAY.   THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE, I THINK, IS THE MOLDED SITS.   HOWEVER, THEY ALL WORK TOGETHER TO START TO CHANGE BEHAVIOR.

NOTE 7:  WHEN YOUR DOG WORKS WITH YOU AT HOME, YOU MAY NEED TO GO DOWN IN TIME AND THEN BUILD BACK UP TO WHERE YOUR DOG WAS TRAINING WITH ME (IF YOU ARE IN PACK LEARNING AND BOARD & TRAIN).  THE DOG WILL WORK BETTER FOR WHOEVER THEY WERE LAST WORKING WITH, SO OFTEN THE TIME NEEDS TO BE BUILT UP BY THE OWNER TO HAVE THE SAME SORT OF WORKING RELATIONSHIP.

NOTE 8:  TRAINING CAN BE DONE IN SEPERATE SESSIONS.  I LIKE TO KEEP MY SESSIONS AT 15 MINUTES IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE DAY (EXCEPT FOR LONG PLACE).  OTHEWISE, YOU CAN BURN YOUR DOG OR PUPPY OUT.

NOTE 9:  MARKER WORDS ARE GOOD=GOOD JOB KEEP GOING YES=GOOD JOB YOU ARE RELEASED FROM THE EXERCISE AND NO=THAT IS NOT WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR.

NOTE 10:   THIS IS A LOT FOR WEEK ONE, SO I AM GOING TO NOTE THE PRIORITIES IN CASE YOU CAN'T GET TO EVERYTHING.  **=priority

NOTE 11:  BLUE TEXT GOES TO THE DIRECTIONS FOR THE EXERCISES.  [IT IS A LINK]

Homework Schedule:

Calming Exercises (If you get up to 30 minutes with long place, you can rotate Sit on The Dog and Long Place on Different Days):

  1. Sit on the Dog 30 + minutes Goal:  To get your dog to lay down on their own steam in five minutes or under. This is Kane and not Knox.  I did not get a video of Knox doing this.
  2. **Long Place 5 minutes to start build up to 30 minutes (at which point, you can start to rotate sit on the dog and long place) Goal:  To get your dog comfortable and more relaxed staying on their place for five minutes.

Obedience Exercises:
  1. **Molded Sit  5-10 minutes Goal:  To get your dog to start relaxing under your touch and feeling like melted ice cream (or in other words starting the sitting motion themselves when you touch their shoulder).  Note:  You can practice these with heeling too if you want to.   If that takes too much, you can rotate heel practice and molded sit practice on every other day (THEN DO AT LEAST 10 MIN OF ONLY MOLDED SIT PRACTICE).

  2. Still Sit Stay (OPTIONAL) 6-7minutes  Goal:  To get four in a row of 1 minute stays.   Knox was already at circle stays this week, so you could use this as a warm up if you decide to do circle sit stays.  NOTE:  REMEMBER THE SPACIAL PRESSURE TRICK IF YOU DO THIS.  THAT IS WHERE YOU STEP AND LEAN TOWARDS HIM WHEN YOU SAY SIT.  THIS IS KANE, AS I DID NOT GET A VIDEO OF KNOX IN THE STILL SIT STAYS.

  3. Circle Sit Stay (OPTIONAL) 6-7 minutes  Goal:  To get four in a row of 1 minute circle stays.

  4. **Heel and Interim Sit Correction 10 minutes (OPTIONAL OR YOU CAN JUST HEEL) Goal;  To get 3 to 5 well positioned steps with Knox in a row before you halt for a sit (halting for a sit is optional because I realize how hard molded or interim sit corrections are with him right now.

  5. **Introduction to Place 3 minutes (this only needs to be done once per new place and/or environment)  Goal:  Just to get your dog familiar with a new place object if necessary.  This video is Remi practicing, and you only need to do this once per different place and/or environment.

  6. **Send to Place 5 plus minutes Goal:  To get your dog to step on themselves for times in a row for 3 sets.

  7. **Circle Place 5 plus minutes  Goal:  To be able to perform 4 circle places in a row for one minute.
